That Unfamiliar Face

6/22/2026

Here is another step into “blackout poetry” also using an excerpt from The Great Gatsby.

Poem:

That unfamiliar face was staring terrified,

As if he “killed” a man.

He began denying his name with every word.

The dream slipped away, struggling toward his lost voice.

I know the “faces” are outrageous, but I think the face on the left is eye-catching, and because the subject’s life is over, I imagined a skull or death to a life he once had. To me, the multiple images of the dragonflies sort of reminds me of a dream sequence. Looking it up, the symbolism of dragonflies can represent change and self-realization which is fitting since the subject is realzing what he is about to lose.

This is a fun project I will continue to do from time to time. It’s something easy to do when I want an outlet but don’t want to take on a big project. Angie
